Even as a child I had an intense curiosity about the nature of being, pestering my Mom with questions like “who am I” or “Where do I really come from?” When I found A Pictorial History of the World published in 1956, I thought I might find some answers. Alas, all I found was war, politics and advancements in technology. Among the few women of note mentioned in the book were Joan of Arc and Henry the 8th’s wives. I think this is when my interest in HERstory began. Coming through the feminist movement of the late 70’s reinforced my interest in women’s identity, untangling historic misinformation and matriarchal societies living in cyclical harmony with the earth while respecting its inhabitants.
My approach to art–making is fairly systematic, using serial investigations to flesh out a concept, which generally come together as an installation. The materials I use are dictated by the concept. I sift through books, movies and the internet to find cultural/historical references to express the nature of each piece. My style is symbolically representational and minimally baroque.
Some of the artists that have inspired me are Betye Saar, Kiki Smith, John Frame, Rebecca Campbell and Bernini.
The following images represent the Personal and Public Art projects you will find in the photo gallery.
