Artist Statement
I believe that each person on the planet is unique, each
with something to offer; and yet I see that many people harbor feelings
of hopelessness – feelings exacerbated by a society that rewards
materialism over spiritualism and mind numbing hours of TV mantras over self–initiated
discovery. Thank goodness I’m an artist – or I would be sucked in
too.
Through my art, I want to encourage self–initiated discovery, as
an antidote to the media’s hypnotic propaganda. I begin by
presenting work that is approachable, and then invite the viewer to
investigate another level or levels of meaning. As a reflection of my
interest in theatrical productions, I set the stage for viewing by
presenting sculptural objects in an engaging atmosphere such as a
“Ladies Lounge” or an “Emporium.” Each object is worthy of
examination, yet much more powerful when combined as a whole
piece. Ultimately I want the viewer to feel uplifted about his or
her own uniqueness, and at the same time more aware of our connections
to each other.
My influences range from literary sources such as Tom Robbins’ “Fierce
Invalids Home from Hot Climates” which questions the nature of our
reality; to feminist icons such as Judy Chicago whose
content driven “The Dinner Party” continues to inspire me to make a
contribution to the world. I am always inspired and delighted by
the ultimate baroque atmosphere I find in the Museum of Jurassic
Technology in Culver City, CA. Lita Albuquerque’s vision, which
dares to go beyond, encourages me to reach for the stars.
